    Piercings and Tatoos

Not me this time... Big Grin

Doing our weekly errands at Walmart, we walked past the jewelry section and I asked Kadie if she wanted to get her ears pierced, thinking I'd get the normal wide-eyed, "Nooooo," response. Instead, I got a wholehearted, "Yes!" Surprised, I asked her several times if it was what she wanted to do and she was all for it. We called Daddy to let him know what was happening, picked out a pair of crystal flower earrings (she kept going for the cartilage piercings - single studs and pretty big), and sat her down with a girl on either side. I sat directly in front of her and could tell the moment it happened. Kadie sat up a little taller, her eyes got really big, and she got this stunned look on her face. She was perfectly fine until one of the guns wouldn't let go of the back of her right earring. She started to cry then, but I think it was more because she was scared than anything else.

Because she did so well (and because they felt bad for the extra trauma at the end), they gave her a sticker and a tatoo. A minute later, we were on our way and Kadie was showing her new earrings to anyone that would listen.

We had discussed this quite a bit and our only concern has been that Kadie is a very rough and tumble little girl and we fear that she will get an earring ripped out. Nervous I have talked with a lot of mothers that have young children with pierced ears and I've yet to hear one horror story along those lines, so I'm hoping my fears are unfounded.

December 20th is the first day we can officially remove her studs and I promised her a pretty pair of Christmas earrings if she took care with the ones she has. Of course, when we got home, she picked up a pair of mine (large, dangly ones) and said she wanted to wear those... Happy

Anyways, I've added "safe ears" to my prayer list. Anyone else is welcome to join me in that.

I mentioned getting Bri's ears pierced when she was little, and Michael pointed out that if any holes were going to be made in her body, then she should be the one to choose..so, nice going Kadie! I don' think it is the actual piercing that hurts so much (it happens so fast!), it is the tenderness while sleeping and such. I could see Bri walking around with only one hole though if they are not fast enough. Blank

That's why I made sure there were two girls that were "qualified" to pierce before I agreed to do it. I knew Kadie wouldn't sit there for number 2 if they were done one at a time.

The tenderness should only last 24 hours at the most - any after that is a sign of infection. The first night, Kadie kept getting out of bed, worried that they would fall out or get caught on something, but she was perfectly fine the next morning.

The bonus of this is that, to keep Kadie's hair from wrapping around the earrings and pulling on them, I've convinced her that keeping it braided or in a pony tail is a necessity. So, my daughter allowed me to braid her hair...and, for the first time in 5 years, she left it that way. So many times I've convinced her to let me put her hair up and, within the hour, all my hard work (you know how much a five-year-old squirms) has been pulled out.

Way to go Kadie! Can't wait to see her new earings!
