    Sick - Again

Posted by Heatherdawn on Sunday, January 17, 2010 @ 10:11 AM

Whatever hit us, hit us hard and fast. Both Kadie and I seem to have some sort of cold or upper respiratory infection. I started feeling all clogged up with a sore throat yesterday morning and Kadie started coughing and breathing like a 50-year-old smoker about the same time. We're both feeling pretty miserable today after a night of little to no sleep, and there's nothing worse than dealing with a 6-year-old who's bored and feeling badly (wow - can we say crabby and just a little obnoxious?).

Unfortunately, it's also 37 degrees and rainy, and the puppy still needs an attendent when he goes outside, so we're trying to bundle up and make the trips quick. He's also suffering from lack of attention since neither Kadie nor I feel much like romping around on the floor at the moment.

Thankfully, tomorrow is a holiday for all of us, so we have an extra day to get over this before we have to make it through a day of school/work. So far, we've made it through the first half of the 20th season of Simpsons and I've started a load of laundry...the debate is still on whether or not that load will be followed by another, or even if that first load will get dried and/or folded.

Kadie was feeling much better today. I didn't feel nearly as congested, but my throat is still pretty raw and dry and I have copious amounts of fluid draining from my nasal passages. I'm currently suffering from some insomnia (it's 1 am our time and I didn't fall asleep until about 9:30 or 10)...whether it's from stress or the pain from my various woes or the discomfort due to the illness or a combination of the three, I don't know. I figured I could get up and get something done though, instead of flopping around in bed, waking up Jeff. I have an 8-page paper due next Tuesday for the end of my current class (Intro to Literature) and I might be able to piece together a coherent thought or two for that. btw...I'll then only have three classes (History, Intro to Film, and Senior Psych Project) to go before I graduate.

Hope you're feeling better. It sounds like you have the same bug Richard, Grandma Dorothy and I just got over. It takes longer (it seems) for adults to kick it - Violet was a little under the weather for about two days, for us it was more like a week to ten days to be completely over it. Be careful as some around here have had to take antibiotics to clear their lungs. I found that putting Vick on my throat at night, helps me breath easier and is also soothing to my sore throat.

If you're wondering....we had our lights flicker several times and then go out for a couple hours, Sunday evening - we've had a lot of strong winds lately. Since then my computer won't come on and I can't figure out how to get past the security to log onto Richard's computer with my password.

Get well - I'm sending lots of love and prays your way. Heart

I've made the diagnosis of sinus infection, based on the copious amounts of thick, green goo that comes oozing out when I have to blow my nose every two minutes. I've now partially lost my voice due to the coating on my vocal chords, and based on past experience, the rest of my voice will soon follow - much to the entertainment of all those around me. Mine has always stayed in the head region, Kadie's sounded a bit lower, but she has bounced back nicely (ah, to be young again). She still has a bit of a cough, but even that is happening less frequently. Jeff has yet to come down with anything...knock on wood that continues.

I actually now carry around, and have strategically placed throughout the house, those little Vicks Vapor Inhalers. They're about the size and shape of a small tampon, which gives Jeff a kick when I use it because it looks like I'm sticking a tampon up my nose. They actually work really well for easing migraines and tension headaches, too. The first night, I rubbed some Vicks cream on Kadie and then put the extra from my hands on my lower throat, but found that it immediately started burning. I'm not sure if that's what she feels when I apply it (she's never complained), or if my skin's just a little more sensitive at this point.

I hope your computer's not fried...got it back on yet?

Still sneaking in to use Richard's. He's been having problems getting his new Quickbooks up and running, so I haven't bugged him about mine. Besides, I have only today and tomorrow to get packed and readdy to leave. We're starting out for Lois' at 7:45AM Friday.

Did you get something for your sinus infection?

Nope - I'm toughing it out as I'd rather not take the chance that it will affect the baby.

You might try some saline nose spray...Michael used something along those lines to help clear sinus infection stuff out. He has also found the Mucinex helps keep it from settling in his chest too much.

I took the Emergen-C each day that I was down at Dad's, while people were crud dropping all around me. Stayed healthy. Easy to take, and easy to pack in a purse. :)

I don't think any of the spray would get to where it's needed at the moment...too much blockage. I am taking a little longer in the shower since it really helps get the overnight supply cleared out, but showers aren't really portable enough for all-day usage. I know people really like the Neti Pots but I don't think I could psych myself up enough to do that to myself.

Unfortunately, the Mucinex isn't approved for pregnancy, but thankfully none of this has traveled past my throat. I did give Kadie a natural alternative to that the first few days she was down as hers was more in her chest and it does help...just don't give/take it right before bed or you won't sleep due to coughing. There's another item on the market that's supposed to help suppress your desire to cough to help you get better sleep (it starts with Dul-something, I believe, and comes in either Orange or Grape, with corresponding box colors) and I gave that to Kadie at night, and it really seems to do a good job.

Mom mentioned the Emergen-C last night and it pinged the memory that I have a box in the cupboard that I originally got for Kadie a while ago (who refused to drink it, of course) so I'm going to try to remember to pull that out and use it.

Cough syrup is Delsym I think...good for nighttime, YES! Dr. OZ has on his website that there are critical vitamins to take, a multi vitamin and A, B, C, and D. Vitamin C keeps your immune system strong. The Emergen-C seems to work for us, and I really only take it once a day, when I might need it. Dr Oz also recommends 100mg of Omega 3 in addition to the vitamins.
