    Violet

Posted by Peggy on Friday, May 14, 2010 @ 08:19 AM

We've got a big day ahead. School gets out at noon (as usual on Fridays)

From 1-2:30 we have the annual Bike-a-Thon, which raises money for the kid's fair bracelets. Violet says she plans to ride 20 laps - that's 10 miles!

Then a trip to Coos Bay to pick up a storage building and Violet's new glasses. We discovered recently that she is nearsighted.

    Thought of the Day #147

What have you tried in life that you just weren't very good at?

Playing an instrument. Even my organ teacher agreed, although she lost a paying student, that I had no talent. I need to watch my fingers - one reason I can't type very fast, and I have NO rhythm. When we were suppose to clap the rhythm in choir, I would fake it by watching what others were doing and not clapping loud enough for anyone to hear. I love to sing, but learn the songs by listening and lots of repetition.

If you are interested in great portraits without the high cost of school photos, Walmart has a special for $7.99. They do adults, too, for the same price. Big Grin

Jeff, when I try to open the blog titled YOU! the "Please wait" pops up then disappears and the blog doesn't open. It opened OK for me last night and the other blogs open today without a problem.

    Birthday

Posted by Peggy on Friday, December 07, 2007 @ 12:20 PM
One nice thing about home schooling is having a holiday on your birthday.
We are still without phone service and started getting more rain last night.  It looks like another rainy day, though not windy.
Violet put in an order for pancakes for breakfast and I made plans to take her to school today to share cupcakes with her friends.
I was going to ask if Amanda could sleep over, but without phones, I haven't been able to make the connection with her mom.  Yesterday when I stopped at school, I was told her little sister had missed two days of school due to illness, (Amanda is home schooled) so maybe it's better we weren't able to make the arrangements.
Grandpa Ed will be coming over tonight to share dinner and cake.
I'm hoping today we can get the tree up.  Between the weather, getting things back in order after our trip, school work, a trip to Coos Bay for shopping and the chiropractor, we just haven't got "a-round-tuit."  Violet has been asking for Christmas decorations everyday, so hopefully we can keep her busy enough that she won't miss having a party this year.  Since I didn't plan to be home for her birthday, I didn't plan a party or get a gift (one reason for the shopping trip) this year.
HeatherDawn, the first DVD is here and wrapped for Violet's birthday. I believe they said the second one would ship on the 11th, so it should be here well before Christmas.  Now if I can just get in gear and get my Christmas shopping started

    Home Again

    Hello from Powers
We arrived home yesterday evening, about 8:45, in the WIND and RAIN!  We drove though slushy snow near Mt. Shasta and arrived home during a hurricane, but had no problems.  The house was cold, but thankfully the electric blankets were working.  Richard started a fire and turned up the furnace.  BRRRRRRRRR
About 5:30 this morning, we lost our electric power and shortly thereafter, we lost our phone connection.  The power came back on about 9:30 AM but, the wind and rain continued for most of the day.  We got what was necessary out of the RV and Richard went out to clean out the plugged culverts.  Otherwise we have been inside, the house is warm again, but we still don't have any phone service.
The weatherman says the wind and rain should let up tomorrow - it's already much calmer.  At least the windows don't sound like they're going to blow out.
Violet wanted to start decorating for Christmas today, but I told her we'll have to wait a day or two, since all the stuff is stored in the shop.
It sure doesn't  feel like Christmas - we haven't even had Thanksgiving  yet, have we?

    Home Again

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 @ 07:14 PM
Thanks to everyone for their positive thoughts and healing prayers.  Mom, Lois, and I had a great trip.
It rained off and on the day we drove to Federal Way, but the traffic was good and the rainbows beautiful.  The next day, we were given a free upgrade to first class and had a smooth flight to Anchorage.  We landed on a clear fall day, enjoyed the gold leaves and white mountains on our drive to Kenai, and arrived just as it was getting dark.
In our hotel room, we found a vase of flowers and a large basket of fruit, trail mix, and chocolates from Robert and Sheila DeVolld.  For those who don't know, the DeVolld's moved to Kenai 40 years ago, fresh out of Bible College, and with Mom and Dad's help, established the Keani Christian Church.
After meeting with Robert, Friday morning, we had lunch them and spent the afternoon visiting with Sheila.
Saturday, was sunny and after a nice service for Dad, we drove to the end of the North Kenai road.  There, at the Captain Cook Park (which Dad helped build) we walked down to the beach and scattered Dad's ashes.  About a 1/4 mile down the road, we scattered Ron's ashes in the Swanson River, his favorite fishing hole.
Sunday, we attended services, had lunch with the DeVolld's and another couple, at Dad's favorite pizza parlor and went back to evening services.  All in all, we saw lots of friends, drove around to familiar places, saw several moose with their calves and enjoyed the beauty of an Alaskan fall.
We were also reminded of why we left Alaska.  Monday morning, we woke to 27 degrees and snow.  Fortunately, it was only a dusting of light snow that blew off the roads, leaving them dry.  Within 10 miles of the hotel, the skies were clear and we had a good drive back to Anchorage.  After a smooth flight and a long drive the next day, we arrived safely home.  Grandma Dorothy is adjusting well and I think greatly relieved, both for herself (she was getting worn out) and for Grandpa Warren (he's been wanting to go home to Heaven for quite a while.)

    This Week

Posted by Peggy on Saturday, July 21, 2007 @ 04:41 PM
    Hi everyone,
Violet enjoyed her week of VBS (9am to 3pm) and now (half hour after she got home Friday) can't find anything to do!

Richard spent most of the last two days rigging black pipe on the roof so we could warm the water for the pool.  Now if we could only have some sun - that's been the problem, we have temps in the low 70's with clouds, so the air is nice, but the water is staying about 72 degrees.  When I was a kid in Alaska, I would have thought that was great, but now I'm older, colder, and hopefully wiser.  We can't complain, at least we aren't drowning or burning up.

Now we are looking forward to fair week.  I spent the morning at the VFW handing out tickets for a day of free rides. Each year the Lioness' sponsor a Bike-a-thon at the end of the school year.  Money pledged is used to buy enough ride bracelets for all the pre-school though high school kids in Powers.

HD check your email for one from me    I sent it to Jeff's address at gmail

    Hope every

    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Hope you have a great day.

Maybe this will help:  Last night Richard said,"Let's not forget that tomorrow is Dave's birthday."  Violet asked, "Will he be 27?"

    Powers Is Back in Power

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 @ 07:51 PM
A couple weeks ago, my old computer died - then last week Richard's hard drive quit.  No web searches, no e-mail, no blogs - we CAN'T live this way!  Makes me wonder how we survived before the computer age.  Anyway, that is why you haven't heard from us.  It was good to catch up on the blogs, but too much information to digest and respond to quickly.
One thing that I have wanted to pass on to HeatherDawn, is the web site for free home schooling: www.connectionsacademy.com
It is based in Maryland, and is free public schooling on the internet.  We have enrolled Violet, here in Oregon, for next year.  You might want to check it out for Kadie - sorry Lisa, as yet Washington has not yet had a school district join.
Because it is public schooling, it is funded by the state and cost you nothing (except your school taxes) and is fully accreditied.  Each student is assigned to a teacher, who is available to help the home coach M-F, 8-4:30.  Students need to check in daily for attendance and to report work accomplished, however, you can adjust their work schedule to meet the needs of your family.  All supplies (books, workbooks, & instructions) are supplied by mail, and all assignments are supplied weekly on the internet.  Students are required to meet all state regulations and testing.  They also offer electives (starting in K,) including foreign languages (starting in 1st grade.)
Other than that, I just want to say thankyou for all the birthday/Mother's day greeting.  Wed., Richard BBQ'd steaks for dinner and made me a cake.  Then on Friday, Lois and Mike came for the weekend.  Lois, Sue, Mom, and I went into town Sat. for shopping and lunch, while Michael stayed with Dad.  Then after church on Sunday, Violet went to a birthday party for her friend and the grown-ups all went to Bandon for a seafood dinner by the ocean.
My note got a little long - love to all - hope you are all enjoying spring. Peggy

    Drive

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 @ 08:15 PM
I almost forgot to post this.  Did any of you watch the premier episode of  Drive Sunday night?  It is regularly scheduled now on Monday nights.  I though it was an amazing show.  I has more twists and turns than the Powers road and continually reveals more info as you go.  I thought Heros was good. This seems similar but faster paced.  There are so many unknowns and so many possibilities I predict a smash hit.  No pun intended.  Check it out, you won't be sorry.

    Only 7 More Days

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 @ 08:02 PM
One week from today life as we (that's us the Or. Todnems) know it will speed up dramatically.  The order has been sent.  The equipment is being prepared and installers alerted.  We are going to satellite internet.  After years of watching and many naps waiting for a page to load we have made the plunge.   We will just have the basic package which is only 30+ times faster than dialup.  No laser beams or death ray options.  Hopfully it will meet expectations. Lately, between the Ameritrade accts, the two web sites, internet banking, credit card payments, all of the shipping info for UPS and FedEx and any search for info, it seems I am living on the internet.  It has been an amazing transition since somewhere back in the early 90's when Jeff got us started on this really cool thing he had discovered.  Who would have guessed.   The other inspiration is the fact that Spring is here or at least supposed to be and I don't want to be stuck behind  this desk when the weather turns nice.  Anyway, when the emails arrive with lightning bolts you will know it's from us.

PS:  Kadie, Grandpa will try and find you some new batteries for your house so the lights won't flicker.

    Spring

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 @ 06:20 PM

Hello, I know it's been a while.  I've been thinking of you out there on the East coast - the weather reports on national TV lead me to believe it's been rather WET and  WINDY.  We've had rain and sun, alternating about every half hour, for the past few days.  It's been a bit chilly.  In fact, this morning about 10 am, I met a pickup in Powers that had about 3 inches of new snow on its roof - it must have come over the pass.  But for the most part it's just SPRING - the grass is growing and the flowers are everywhere.

Today, school was dismissed at noon due to the fact there was a funeral for one of the old time residents and they were expecting about half the town to turn out.  Tomorrow, I'll be subbing for the K/1 class in the am and 4th grade in the afternoon.

Last Wednesday, I got a shot of cortisone in my left hip and it's doing so much better!  The shot was awful and the day after was extremely painful, but now I can walk upstairs again without pain.  I hope to get back to my treadmill soon.

    Love and kisses to all

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF

Hope you have a wonderful day.
Your dad is gone for jury duty again today - they are suppose to decide on the verdict today for the case he heard last week.  Hope all are well back there and staying safe on the slick roads.
Love to you and yours   Peggy

    Happy Birthday Zachary

Posted by Peggy on Friday, January 19, 2007 @ 12:58 AM
All day, Richard and I have been reminding each other to call Zachary.  Of course we spent the day away from the phone, moving buildings...to Coos Bay, then from Myrtle Point to the other side of North Bend.  We got home about 4:45 and Richard went to work picking up trash ( Sarah had FUN while we were gone) and I started dinner and supervised homework.  Richard arrived inside just in time for dinner and after dinner....  well we remembered about 9:30 that we were going to call.
Sorry Zachary.  We love you and we WILL call this weekend so you can tell us all about your big day.
    Love and Kisses, Grandma

I don't know what the temp is this morning, but there was ice on my bathroom window.
Yesterday morning, we woke up to a cold bed, colder room and no electricity (it went off between 3-4am.)  I got up to get another comforter and Richard went out to start the fire about 5:45.  Violet got up and wanted to go outside to play in the snow - this is the kid I have to drag out of bed at 7am on school days.  About 8, Richard took the truck over to pick up Ed so he could share a warm breakfast and a warm house until the power came on just before 9.  I feel sorry for those in NE who have been without power for 2 weeks and may have another 3 wks. to go.
After breakfast, Violet went out to play and was later jioned by Richard to build a 5' snowman.  Other than a couple short visits for dry clothes and warm food, Violet spent most of the day outside.  There's not school again today since the temp. went down and now the snow is frozen - got to go - Richard made himself an appointment in Coos Bay today to get his eyes checked.  We need to allow lots of time for slick roads.
    Love and hugs

    Happy New Year

Posted by Peggy on Friday, January 05, 2007 @ 02:05 AM

OK, I'm typing this on Word and HOPE I can transfer it to the blog without loosing it somewhere in computer space.

Today is the first time I've read blogs since sometime before Christmas.  I was busy!  Or Richard had the computer tied up when I wasn't.  Anyway, I'll try to remember all the topics I found important.

    1. HeatherDawn - To cut down on the stress, and lack of Holiday Spirit, I know a home that is full of love and that could do with a few more people next year.  All you have to do is be here - I'll decorate, cook, etc. I'll even bake you fresh bread (everyday if you'll be here to eat it.)

As far as the Santa gifts - Violet came to us believing in Santa (not because your brother wanted it) and I agreed to carry on, but limited his gifts to what would fit in a stocking on Christmas Eve.  Everything else has a "to and from" sticker.  Violet has been fine with it, although she has become a little doubtful this year.

Did I miss something or did you say how Lost is doing?

    2. Everyone else - keep your opinions on children to yourself!  We are still hopeful for at least one more grandchild.  Though I would settle for seeing more of the ones we have.  Violet seems more like our child than our grandchild, we can't spoil her like we can the other grandchildren, at least she doesn't think so.  On the 1st, I told her that she was old enough to start rinsing her dishes and putting them in the dishwasher.  By the time she helped clear the table last night (Jan. 2nd), she asked, "Is this going to be one of my jobs from now on?!?"

Well, again I got cut off before I had a chance to finish this - can't remember now if there were any other issues to address, so I'll just say -

Have a Happy and Blessed New Year.

    Not Again

Posted by Peggy on Saturday, November 25, 2006 @ 01:39 AM
Just a short note to let you know what we've been up to.  A week ago (Thur.) I spent the moning listening to second graders read.  Friday, I woke with a sore throat - they weren't coughing all over me like they usually do and I guess I let my guard down.
Friday, I baked for the Lioness' bake sale.
Sat. a.m., we delivered the baked goodies then picked up and delivered a building, then picked up another building and brought it home.
Sunday, after church, I roasted two turkeys and made a pie for our potluck Thanksgiving dinner at church that evening.
Monday, we delivered a building to Charlston. (Still had a sore throat.)
Tuesday, I took Mom shopping in Coos Bay.
Wed., Violet had a half day of school.  We took a little time out to watch the end of Sunday's Nascar race and saw Jimmy Johnson win the championship - FINALLY.
Then it was back to laundry, house cleaning, etc.
Thursday, we had another Thanksgiving dinner with Mom, Dad, Sue and David.  They left before dark and then the McNeil's (a family from church) came up for pie and games.  They have two teenage boys and a girl Violet's age.  All three are rather immature for their ages and very boisterous.  My sore throat had now matured into a nice cold.
Friday morning, Susan's brother, Tony arrived with Amiee and his two children, Jessica (8) and Matthew (5).  We have had a VERY PLEASENT visit.  They have all been happy, friendly and well mannered.
Tomorrow morning, we are all leaving about 10:30.  Tony and the kids back to Hillsbough and we are going south to Brookings to help celbrate Richard's grandmother's 100th birthday.
Guess that wasn't so short - got to get to bed.  Love to all, Peggy

    We're Back

Posted by Peggy on Friday, October 20, 2006 @ 01:07 PM
That's strange.... I started to type the text and instead it submitted my title.
The problem with not being able to get on line was Richard left the computer on line.  Instead of it kicking off after 20 minutes, as he expected, it got left on several days and/or nights and we ran out of service hours.  Since we've spent most of our daylight hours out on the hillside lately, the problem wasn't discovered until I tried to get caught up with blogs last Tuesday.

Besides working with Richard, I have kept busy making applesauce for the high school breakfast program, listening to kids read at school, Lioness and church activities, learning about the Friends of the Library program, and all the other 101 things moms do.

We're expecting all the grandparents, plus Sue and David, for Thanksgiving.  Anyone else able to come?   And what about Christmas?  Lisa has already told me they'll try to make it.

I know I haven't added to the Christmas list for Violet.  She has so many toys, so far I haven't had any good ideas.  However, we are going to WalMart for pictures today, so I'm sure she will be glad to do some dream shopping.  I took her in for a check up a couple weeks ago and they told me she's on the 75% for height and weight.  Size 8 seems to fit well if you want to get clothes.  Right now we're hearing: "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth."

I've also hit the 20# mark on Nutrisystem, though I haven't been walking much lately.  My left hip has been bothering me for a couple months now.  The chiropractor said it hasn't shortened up, but the pressure points he said to work on didn't seem to do the job.  Guess I'll have to see the doctor - I'm afraid he's going to tell me it's more bone spurs.  I keep telling myself it's just one of those fibromyalgia things and it will eventually feel better.

Here's love to everyone - I'm taking this thing off line now.  Richard says we will have limited access until Nov. 1.

    Short Note

Posted by Peggy on Thursday, October 05, 2006 @ 10:12 PM
Just wanted to say we are still alive and kicking (but not very high.)  I just read through the blogs for this week, but don't have the time or energy to answer.  I did try to send a short note Monday, but it disappeared.
Monday, I helped out in Violet's class and attended a women's meeting at church.  After school, Violet and I cleaned up fallen apples in the orchard and took them to the cows. Tuesday, after dropping Violet off at school we went to Coos Bay with a list of errands.  We got back in time to pick up Violet and then follow the ambulance up the drive.  Richard left with Ed for the hospital and didn't return until late.  Wed., we ran up & down, around & around until everything was unloaded and the truck back on the road.  Then collapsed!
Today was easy - I subbed for special ed at the grade school in the morning and home ec at the high school in the afternoon.   Then we came home and all three of us stacked a core of wood.  Fortunately, there were leftovers in the frig.  It's now 7:10 and I need to get Violet in bed.
Tomorrow we get another cord of wood.....................................................Love to all

    Bug?

Posted by Peggy on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 @ 08:23 PM
I'm not sure if this is a bug or if you were working on site while I was.  Yesterday, I wrote a comment to HD's blog and then tried to add a couple lines by editing.  When I hit update, an error message said the www.todnem site took too long to respond.  I clicked on try again and got the same message.  The edited sentences were never added.  This is the same thing that happened when I tried to add to Lisa's graditude list.

Am I doing something wrong, or are you just messing with me???????????

    Good Morning

    Hello from Sunny Oregon,
Yesterday we found another kink in the water line.  It's amazing what wet ground can do to a PVC pipe, it looked like a very tight inverted V.  Since we didn't start until 3:30 pm, we didn't get it tested and reburied yesterday, so will continue the process today.  It does give us a reason to be out in the beautiful fall weather.
    Sending love your way.

    Welcome Jeff

I haven't had a chance to read blogs in a couple days, but was happy to see you got a day "off" so you could entertain us.    I really enjoyed your 12 hour tale, but  what was that about a Ford - it made about as much sense to me as your web instructions do.  Guess I'm showing my ignorance - but what ever you have to say, I'm just glad you finally have time to join the conversations.
After a couple days of playing in the dirt with Richard, I spent most of today doing laundry, packing, etc. so we can leave first thing in the morning.  Until about 3pm today, I thought we were leaving at 10am, but that's been moved up to 7:45 am.
Unless we get on the computer at Lisa's, you won't be hearing from us until about Wed. but don't think we're mad, we'll just be gone.

P.S. we got RAIN !!! it started about 8pm and really got with the program for a while.
Love and hugs to all..........see you tonight, Lisa, Mike, Zach and Bri.

    Bug New Blogs

This may be the same as the bug Richard was talking about in #2 of his 8/24/06, Bug Quaility Control blog.
When I logged in yesterday, and again today, there were no blog titles showing.
Instead, it said: you have no new blogs.
I checked the tag clouds and reset the day search from Any to3 days.
I then saw two or three blogs that, although they were not new themselves, did have new comments that I had not previously seen.
Thanks again, for all your time and hard work.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHERDAWN
(Just encase your friends read these posts, I won't say Happy 30th Birthday)
Hope you have a wonderful day - I'm sending lots of love your way.
Thursday afternoon, Grandma Anne and Grandma Dorothy joined me at Kathy's beautiful home, about a mile beyond Powers, for our annual Powers' Women's Retreat.  We had a wonderful afternoon - sunshine, with a comfortable breeze - sitting outside in the shade, talking and smelling the turkey roasting on the BBQ.    About 6pm we had dinner and then Lois Richards talked to us about the gift of encouragement.  Lois and her husband started their minister in the 60's, in Kodiak, Alaska.
Today, we have to take Grandma Anne back to the airport - we'll miss her.
Hope you all have a great weekend - I'll be processing apples.

    Apples and Airports

Posted by Peggy on Monday, August 21, 2006 @ 11:43 AM
We have a building to deliver, here in Powers, at 10 am.  Then we plan to pick apples - which means my kitchen floor will be sticky, but the pies will taste good.
Then at 6:10 pm, Grandma Anne is due in at the airport.  Richard said she had to leave home at 6:30 am in order to make connections.  The scheduling always has a long layover in Portland, because the earlier flight from Portland to North Bend leaves within 5-10 minutes of the arrival from Seattle.
I'm not sure how long Grandma will be here, as busy as she is, we're lucky to get her down a couple times a year.
