    FYI...

In case any of you have already tried the Search feature and had difficulties getting the results you wanted, I've added a new Help document that includes some hints on how to narrow your results to exactly what you're looking for. You can either find it under the Help section with the title of "Search Tips", or you can simply hover your mouse over the Search box and a quick link for "Search Tips" will show up. Tag Clouds - Just Another Blogging Bonus

Posted by Jeff on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 @ 07:37 AM
If you've been following the recent progress of the site, you may have noticed a new feature that is now available after clicking on the "view blogs by..." button.  I am slowly adding in more ways to make searching for blogs both easy and fun.  The latest of these features is known as a "tag cloud" in Internet-speak.  A tag cloud is essentially a collection of words or phrases that are specifically mentioned within, or related to, a blog entry.  The tags are listed in alphabetical order and the font size of each tag is directly proportional to the frequency of its use.  In other words, the larger a particular tag appears within the cloud , the more common the tag, and thus a larger number of blog entries that utilize that particular tag.  Selecting blogs based on a tag is as easy as clicking on a tag within the tag cloud.  In addition to the tag clouds, you will also find similar references at the bottom of each individual blog.  Clicking on tags listed after Categories and Keywords will result in blogs related to that particular tag, the same as it does when clicking on a tag within a cloud.  NOTE: If you no longer want to specify a keyword or category, simply click the word "any" in the respective tag cloud or at the beginning of Categories or Keywords within an individual blog entry.

    Simple and fun, right?

So why use tags?  Isn't the blog entry itself enough?  One of the best ways to find topic-specific blogs as well as have your blog found by others, is to label each blog entry with one or more tags.  This is done by selecting one or more Categories, as well as entering individual words or phrases, separated by commas, into the Keywords text box, within the Blog editor window.  Listing specific categories and keywords related to your blog entry provides readers with a quick and easy method for locating blogs based on a particular topic, without having to search through the entire text of each and every blog entry.  Categories should be topics related to the content of your blog.  Keywords can be generic, or very specific, and they don't necessarily have to be listed in the message content itself.  They can simply be a reference word, or related to the topic material in some manner.  Selecting categories and adding keywords to your entries is not required, but as the number of blogs increases, this method of "tagging" each entry will provide great assistance to you and others in locating a specific blog out of hundreds.  So please try and use these features as they are actually there to help everyone.

What Happened to All the Blogs??

Well some of you late nighters may have just been sitting in great anticipation of the July-August rollover.  It wasn't all that spectacular so don't worry if you missed it.

If anyone did happen to be up and attempted to access the Blogs you might have noticed an apparent lack of entries.  This is by design... poor design.    I realized very quickly that some more changes are required to make this ideal.  For now, I have eliminated the Month tag so you'll continue to see any posts from the year 2006.  As quickly and cleverly as I can, I'm going to work in a feature or two that allow you to view posts within the last XX amount of days, vs from a particular month.  This only affects the default settings.  The Month tags will still be available for searching.

So if you missed the rollover, you'll never even know.  If you were going crazy trying to find your posts, now you know why you're in a nuthouse.

I'll let you know as soon as the new feature is ready to test.  Hope everyone has a great day!

    Themes, Skins and Other Options

Okay, so I have a new idea that may work better than simply suggesting color combos.  I have yet to actually try this out and see if it works, but I believe the concept will indeed succeed.  Instead of trying to get you guys to send or describe colors I have decided to simply let you choose.  And by "choose" I don't mean just a few colors, I mean choosing how the entire site looks and feels.

The plan (right now) is to create a page (possibly as part of your account settings or maybe completely separate), where you can select or enter specific colors, styles, and sizes for backgrounds, tables, dividers, borders, forms, etc. The color selections will be similar to the color selector for fonts in the editor [Font Color], or if you new the hexidecimal code for a specific shade (I know, I know), you could enter it directly into the field.  Sizes will be simple drop menus with numeric values, as well as optional styles for various items. Anyway, once you make all your selections, there will be an option to save your selections as a "custom style sheet" which will load and be available just for your account.  Multiple style sheets will be allowed so you can create as many as you want and switch back and forth using a selection menu. Again, this is all just a concept until I get a chance to test it out, so wait and see.  The whole thing will probably make more sense once I get a demo page put together and you'll better understand what I'm talking about.  Just wanted to give you all a heads up, that's all.

I'm sitting in class right now (we're on lunch break).  Class is very good so far.  I'm learning lots of cool new stuff which will help make this site, and others in the future, a lot more efficient.  Most of it is back-end stuff which you guys won't see much of, but it all helps to improve the site performance so hooray for that.  And it should help to make it easier for me to maintain the code and add in lots of new options.

I haven't gotten around to creating a full fledged search engine yet for the blogs.  But I still plan to add something additional for those who don't find what they're looking for using the "View Blogs by..." tag clouds.  That's a project for a slightly later date, however.

So how has everyone's day been so far?  Good, I hope.

    Tagging Items

Posted by Richard on Saturday, July 15, 2006 @ 02:44 PM

A tag is simply a word or phrase that is used to describe one or more themes within your content. It is a way of cataloging actual or conceptual references within your text, so that your content can be easily retrieved in the future.

To use an analogy, tags are designed to work similarly to the index of a book. Tags, like the book index, allow you to find content related to specific terms. The only difference is that with tags, you don't need to know which page the content is on.

    Tag Updates:
Because of the sheer volume of tags used throughout the site, we have opted to move the bulk of tag processing offline, rather than filtering live.  As such, tags are not immediately available to users once they've been added to content.  However, testing showed that processing tags offline allowed for a dramatic increase in site performance.  When we stacked the pros and cons, performance came out on top.  Not to worry, however, because tags are automatically updated within the system every hour, on the hour.  So you never have to wait long after you add tags to see them.
    The Tags Module:

Tags within the Tags module are automatically refreshed each time the main record list reloads.  If you click on a particular member's username under the Members module, the tags, archives and styles for that individual are automatically loaded.  Likewise when you deselect the member's username the Tags and Archives sections will reload to reflect the changes.  If you select a group under the Groups module, a compilation of all the tags used by members within that group is loaded into the Tags module.  If neither member nor group are selected, the Tags module will load up a small collection of popular tags used by everyone on the site.  For larger tag collections, the less popular tags are removed by default.  To view the entire collection in this instance, click on the "more" link at the bottom of the Tags module.

    Search using tags:

You can locate content easily using tags in several different ways. Clicking on an individual tag within the "Keywords" section of a post will retrieve content that matches that tag against the tagged items in the database, or you can use the search function which matches your search term against the title, content and tag fields of items in the database.

Adding your own tags to content:

One or more tags can be added to just about any item that uses an editor window to modify its content. If you see a "Tag this..." field in the editor window, you can add/modify tags for that item. Choosing the tags is completely up to the user. You can select tags which fit the overall concept of your post, or you can simply add custom tags that make it easier for you yourself to retrieve the content at a later date. It's completely up to you.

Allowing others to tag your items:

Keep in mind that if you give permission to other members to tag (reference), comment (respond) or modify (revise) your content, they will have the ability to add tags to your content. Additionally, any tags added to comments in response to one of your posts, will automatically be appended to the tags for your post. This is done to assist in retrieving the posts and related comments at a later date. If you, as the author of a post, do not agree with the tags others have added, you can simply remove the individual tags using the editor.

Lastly, the ability to tag, among other options, is a privilege that only you can grant to others. Always double check your group permissions for each item (under the "Share this..." section of the editor), to ensure they are set correctly.
